Media Creation E (Design)

In this lecture we will deepen our knowledge from the perspectives of “visual design,” “visual literacy,” and “interaction design” in relation to design. We will delve deeper into addressing the subject of contemporary “planning” = “design” and the possibilities for development henceforth.

Visual design:
From ubiquitous design examples various elements such as technology, materials, and methods, along with historical backgrounds, cultural contexts, resources, and discussions on archiving are combined from various perspectives and the design is interpreted. Furthermore, the relationship between design and society, as well as issues related to sustainability and ethics, are critically and integratively examined.

Visual literacy:
Despite learning reading and writing literacy skills with regards to language, why are we never taught about visual literacy? We will first outline the history of design processes. Afterwards, we will then question again the visual aspect, which should have originally been essential in human activities within society, much like language. Furthermore, in design inclusive of visual thinking, the output ultimately impacts society. Taking into account the influence that design output has on society, we reflect on its role and responsibility, considering criticisms of society and design in various contexts.

Interaction design:
Defining design as interaction design and placing a spotlight on the relationship between humans and technology, whilst reflecting on the history up until now, we will also consider possible future developments. On a needs basis we will reference and discuss examples of works made in the past such as interactive artworks, and new methods of design such as critical design, and speculative design.
